7 Ways to be Your New Dog's Best Friend

Adding a new dog or puppy to your life may seem like a “romp in the park” to start out, but there is much responsibility to consider before making your decision.

1. Exercise
Although different types of dogs require varying amounts of exercise, every dog needs to go out for a walk and elimination several times a day. Many large breeds desire an opportunity to run free in a large protected area. If you choose a larger sized breed, make sure you have room to allow for his exercise needs.

2. Health
Providing healthy food, fresh water, dry shelter and grooming are a pet owner’s responsibility. Just as important is your dog’s health care. Make sure your pet receives all necessary immunizations and checkups.

3: Play
Your dog needs personal attention. Remember, you are his/her family. Make sure there are plenty of toys to play with. Get out in the yard or park and throw a ball or frisbee with him.

4. Training
If you have never trained a dog, find a reputable trainer and take your dog to classes. Most likely, you need as much training as your dog. Dogs naturally alert the family of intruders as one of their most important jobs. Teach him to obey commands that convey appropriate levels of barking.

5. Birth Control
Unless your dog will be purposely breed, spay or neuter him/her. There are already too many unwanted animals in shelters. Your dog will be healthier and safer by taking the appropriate steps.

6. Supervision
Of course, your dog needs supervision with a safe environment when you are away. But, when children are present, especially strangers to your dog, you should be present to supervise. You can’t guess what your dogs every move will be. Nor can you know how children unfamiliar with your dog will react to him.

7. Clean up
Not only is it a pet owner’s responsibility to clean up your dog’s living area, but also when you take him/her out for a walk. Make sure to take plastic bags along in order to clean up and dispose of his waste.
